SAMPLE ITINERARIES

Manuel Antonio Itineraries: 1 Day, 3 Days and 5+ Days

One day in Manuel Antonio is enough for an early morning in the national park and an afternoon at the beach. Three days lets you add a boat trip and a slow day. With five or more you can fit in a waterfall, the mangroves, Quepos market day and real rest. These are suggestions, not schedules: move things around the weather, your energy and the park’s Tuesday closing.

BEFORE YOU START

Three rules that shape every plan

  1. The park is closed on Tuesdays and opens 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. the rest of the week (SINAC). Book tickets online in advance. Details in our park guide.
  2. Mornings are for animals, afternoons are for water. Wildlife and people are both more active in the cool early hours. In the green season, rain often arrives in the afternoon, which is a good time for the spa or a nap.
  3. Don’t stack it. One big activity per day, plus a swim and a good dinner, is the pace most people actually enjoy here. Travel days count as a full activity.

Every activity below links to our guide or to the ECOTICA page where you can book it. Items ECOTICA arranges are marked (book through ECOTICA).

ONE DAY

One day in Manuel Antonio

Any day except Tuesday. If you’re here on a Tuesday, swap the morning for a boat trip and walk Playa Espadilla instead.

Early morning: the national park

Be at the entrance for the 7:00 a.m. opening with your ticket and ID. Take a guided walk to look for sloths, monkeys and birds, then find a spot at Playa Manuel Antonio or Espadilla Sur. Manuel Antonio National Park; guided walks (book through ECOTICA).

Midday: lunch and shade

Leave the park before the hottest hours. Remember you can’t bring food onto the trails or beaches. Lunch in Manuel Antonio village or back at your hotel.

Afternoon: slow down

Swim, nap or book a massage at Jungle Spa (book through ECOTICA). If you still have energy, walk down to Playa Espadilla.

Evening: sunset and dinner

Watch the sunset from the hill road or the marina, then dinner. Ideas in our evening guide.

THREE DAYS

Three days: park, ocean and a slow day

Day 1: arrive and settle in

  • Travel from San José by road (roughly 3 to 4 hours, an estimate) or fly to Quepos. See getting here. A private transfer can be booked through ECOTICA.
  • Afternoon: unpack, swim, and look up. Wildlife often passes through the trees around the hotels here.
  • Evening: an easy dinner close by. Dining at ECOTICA runs until 9:00 p.m.

Day 2: Manuel Antonio National Park

Day 3: on the water, then the spa

  • Morning: catamaran cruise or snorkeling trip (ocean and boat tours, book through ECOTICA). If this day is a Tuesday, it’s the perfect use of it.
  • Afternoon: Jungle Spa massage or yoga (wellness).
  • Evening: dinner and a night at YOLO Social; ask us what’s on.

Leaving on day 4? Allow a morning for the drive or flight, and don’t book anything strenuous that morning.

FIVE DAYS OR MORE

Five days or more: add inland adventures and local life

Start with the three-day plan above, then add days from this list, one per day:

Adventure day

An ATV ride or waterfall outing in the hills behind the coast (jungle adventure tours, book through ECOTICA), or horseback riding through the concierge.

Waterfall day trip

Nauyaca Waterfalls near Dominical, about an hour south according to Nauyaca’s site. Go with a private 4×4 Jeep and local driver-guide for up to five people (book through ECOTICA) or a rental car. It’s a full day.

Mangrove morning

A boat or kayak trip through the Damas Island estuary northwest of Quepos. Times depend on the tide, so keep the day flexible. See things to do.

Quepos market day (Friday or Saturday)

The farmers market by the malecón on Friday afternoon or Saturday morning, then lunch at the marina and a walk along the seafront. Read our history of Quepos first.

Wildlife rescue visit

A guided visit to Kids Saving the Rainforest, a non-profit rescue center in the Quepos area. Check their site for tour times.

A second park morning

Animals are different every day. A second, unguided visit lets you walk at your own pace to viewpoints like Punta Serrucho (check which trails are open).

A true rest day

Yoga on the deck, the pool, a book, a long lunch. Some of the best wildlife sightings happen when you’re sitting still.

Sample five-day order

  1. Arrive and settle in.
  2. National park (not Tuesday).
  3. Boat trip and spa.
  4. Adventure or waterfall day.
  5. Quepos market (Friday/Saturday) or mangroves, then a slow afternoon.
RAINY DAYS

If it rains

Rain is part of the rainforest, and most of it comes in heavy afternoon bursts in the green season. Ask your tour operator what happens if it rains. Options that don’t depend on the weather:

  • Jungle Spa: massages, facials and body treatments (book through ECOTICA).
  • The gym, with rainforest views (wellness).
  • Kids Saving the Rainforest: a guided visit to the rescue center (check tours).
  • Games and the casino at YOLO Social (21+ for the casino) (YOLO Social).
  • Lunch at the marina or coffee and pastries at Café ECOTICA (dining).
  • Read up on the wildlife and plants you’ll see when it clears.
