The short answer: yes. Manuel Antonio is one of the most visited and most relaxed corners of Costa Rica, and most trips go by without a single problem. Like any beach town, it rewards a little common sense: keep valuables out of sight on the beach, respect the ocean and its currents, and take a taxi at night instead of walking the hilly main road.

Safety at a glance
| Topic | What to know | Simple habit |
|---|---|---|
| Beaches | Bags left alone on the sand are the most common loss | Bring only what you need; one person stays with the things |
| The ocean | Waves and rip currents can be strong on open beaches | Swim where others swim, stay close to shore, never swim after drinking |
| Monkeys | Capuchins and raccoons learn to open bags for food | Close your bag, do not feed the animals |
| Getting around at night | The main road has hills, curves and little sidewalk | Use official red taxis or ask the hotel to call one |
| Sun and heat | The tropical sun is strong even on cloudy days | Sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water |
On the beach and in the park
The calm, protected beaches inside Manuel Antonio National Park and Playa Biesanz are the gentlest for swimming. Open beaches like Playa Espadilla can have stronger waves and currents: watch the water first and swim where others are swimming. In the park, food in open bags attracts monkeys and raccoons, so keep snacks packed away.
