Eco Hotel in Manuel Antonio: What a Rainforest Stay Is Like

Staying at an eco hotel in Manuel Antonio means sleeping in the rainforest, not next to it. You wake to howler monkeys, you share the paths with lizards and butterflies, and the afternoon rain sounds loud on the leaves. At ECOTICA, a boutique hotel on about 10 acres of forest minutes from Manuel Antonio National Park, that is the everyday rhythm, with a comfortable room, a pool and good food to come back to.

What “eco hotel” means here

The word gets used a lot in Costa Rica. For a guest, the useful question is simple: does the place keep the forest around it, and does it let you live alongside it for a few days?

At ECOTICA the answer starts with the land itself. The rooms and bungalows sit among about 10 acres of rainforest, so trees and animals are part of the stay instead of a view from a distance. We also do some practical things: part of our electricity comes from solar panels, and we collect rainwater for some of our water use. We would rather show you than list slogans. Come for a morning coffee on your terrace and you will see what we mean.

A day in the rainforest, hour by hour

  • Around 5:00 to 6:00 am. Howler monkeys start calling. It sounds far louder and closer than it is. Birds follow soon after.
  • Early morning. The best light and the most activity. Toucans and scarlet macaws often cross the sky, and this is a good time to look for sloths before the heat builds.
  • Late morning to early afternoon. Hot and humid. Most animals rest, and so should you: the pool, a nap, or a trip down to the beach.
  • Afternoon. In the green season (roughly May to November), rain often arrives in the afternoon. It is warm and usually passes.
  • Evening. Frogs and insects take over the soundtrack. Bring a small flashlight for the paths.

Wildlife you may see around the grounds

Howler monkeys, sloths, toucans, scarlet macaws and butterflies are the regular visitors at ECOTICA. We see them most days, but these are wild animals moving through their own territory. No one can promise a sighting at a set time.

A few simple rules keep you and the animals safe:

  • Never feed monkeys or any other animal. Human food makes them sick and bold.
  • Keep snacks inside and close your terrace doors when you go out. Monkeys are curious and fast.
  • Watch from a distance and let animals move away on their own.
  • Look before you sit on a lounger or put on shoes left outside overnight.

Comfort in the forest

Rainforest does not mean roughing it. You get a comfortable room to come back to, plus a rainforest-view pool, daily breakfast and a restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The Jungle Spa uses natural ingredients such as cacao, tropical botanicals and mineral clays, and there are yoga classes on the deck and a small gym that looks out into the trees.

Choose your room by how you travel:

  • Couples: the Signature Bungalow is a private bungalow with a terrace in the trees.
  • Longer stays: the Premium Bungalow adds a full kitchen.
  • Families and friends: the Double Queen Suite sleeps four, and the Grand Master Suite sleeps six.

What to pack for a rainforest stay

  • Light, quick-dry clothes and one long-sleeved layer for the evening
  • A rain jacket or small umbrella, even in the dry season
  • Closed shoes with grip for trails, plus sandals for the pool
  • Insect repellent and reef-safe sunscreen
  • Binoculars, and a zoom lens if you like photography
  • A reusable water bottle

Expect humidity. Leather and electronics like a dry bag, and clothes take longer to dry than at home.

How to travel lightly in Manuel Antonio

Small choices add up in a place this rich in life:

  • Hire local, licensed guides for the national park and tours. They know the animals and the rules.
  • Stay on marked trails and do not pick plants or shells.
  • Carry your trash out of the beaches and the park.
  • Reuse towels and switch things off when you leave the room.
  • Eat at local sodas (small family restaurants) when you go into town.

Who enjoys a rainforest stay most

  • Nature lovers and photographers, who like wildlife on their doorstep in the early morning.
  • Couples who want quiet evenings and privacy.
  • Families with curious kids, who will count sloths and frogs all week.

If you want nightlife on the doorstep or the sand outside your room, the area near the beach may suit you better. Our guide to where to stay in Manuel Antonio compares the areas.

FAQ

Will I see monkeys at the hotel?

Very likely, though no honest host will promise it. Howler monkeys are heard almost every morning, and capuchins, sloths and toucans are frequent visitors. Early morning and late afternoon give you the best chances.

Is it noisy in the rainforest?

Yes, in a natural way. Howler monkeys call around dawn, and frogs and insects sing at night. Most guests end up loving it; light sleepers may want earplugs for the first night.

Are there many insects?

There are insects, as in any tropical forest. Repellent in the evening and closed doors after dark make a big difference. Rooms are built to keep you comfortable.

How far is ECOTICA from the national park?

ECOTICA is minutes from Manuel Antonio National Park by car. The hotel is not in the park and not on the beach, so plan a short ride to both.

Is an eco hotel good for families?

Yes, if your children like animals and the outdoors. Kids love spotting sloths and toucans from the balcony. Ask us which rooms suit your family best.
