Most visitors to Manuel Antonio stay in one of three places: the town of Quepos, the hillside road that climbs from Quepos toward the national park, or the few streets near the park entrance and Playa Espadilla. Choose by what matters most to you: walking to the beach, having rainforest and wildlife around your room, or being close to the marina and town. The park and the main beaches are a short drive from all three.

The three main areas at a glance
Manuel Antonio is small. The whole stretch from Quepos to the park gate is one winding road, so “where” is really about setting and how you want to get around.
| Area | Good for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Quepos town | The marina, fishing and boat departures, local restaurants and shops | You will take a car, taxi or bus to the park and beaches |
| The hillside road | Rainforest around you, sea views from some hotels, restaurants along the road | Hills and curves; walking the road after dark is not much fun |
| Near the park entrance and Playa Espadilla | Walking to the beach and the park gate | Busier during the day, less forest around you |
Quepos
Quepos is the working town. It has the bank branches, the supermarket, the marina and a good number of local sodas (small family restaurants). It suits travelers who plan several fishing or boat days, or who like evenings in a real town. The trade-off is that the beaches and the park are a drive away, and you wake up to traffic instead of birds.
The hillside road
Most hotels sit along the road between Quepos and the park. Here the forest comes right up to the buildings. Mornings start with howler monkeys and parrots, and many properties sit on slopes, so expect steps. You are close to everything, but plan on taxis, a rental car or the hotel’s help to get around, especially at night.
Near the park entrance
Down at the bottom of the hill you can walk to Playa Espadilla and the park gate. That is handy with small children or if you want the beach every day. It is also where day visitors arrive, so it is the busiest part of Manuel Antonio from mid-morning on.
Boutique hotel, large resort or vacation rental?
Each type works. They just give you a different trip.
- Boutique hotels are small, so staff learn your name and can help plan your days. Rooms tend to have more character, and the grounds feel quieter. You may have fewer on-site restaurants and facilities than a large resort.
- Larger resorts offer more pools, more restaurants and a set routine. They can feel busier, and you share the grounds with more people.
- Vacation rentals give you a kitchen and space for groups. You handle your own meals, transport and tour bookings, and there is no front desk to call when you need something.
If you want to see wildlife from your terrace and have someone help you plan tours, a small rainforest hotel is usually the right fit. If you want the beach at your door every morning, look near Playa Espadilla.
What to compare before you book
- Getting around. Ask how guests usually reach the park and beaches. Taxis are easy to find, and some hotels arrange transport.
- Steps and slopes. Many properties are built on hillsides. If anyone in your group has trouble with stairs, ask which rooms are easiest to reach.
- Setting. Forest views and animal visits, or sea views and sunsets? Few rooms give you everything, so pick your priority.
- Meals. Check what is served on site and how late. After a long day it helps not to drive for dinner.
- Room layout. Couples often prefer a private bungalow. Families and friends usually need two beds or connecting rooms.
Where should couples stay in Manuel Antonio?
Most couples want three things here: privacy, a view of the trees or the sea, and dinner without a drive. The hillside road gives you the most of all three. The forest comes right up to the rooms, many of the hotels are small, and restaurants line the road. Near Playa Espadilla you give up some privacy to walk to the sand. Quepos makes sense if one of you plans to fish.
- For privacy: a stand-alone bungalow rather than a room in a larger building.
- For quiet evenings: a hotel with its own restaurant, so the evening ends with a short stroll back to your room.
- For a slow day: a spa on site and a pool you share with just a few guests.
- For wildlife: a hotel with its own forest, where monkeys and sloths pass by the room.
At ECOTICA, couples often choose the Signature Bungalow: a private bungalow for two with a king bed and its own terrace in the trees. Add a couples massage at Jungle Spa and dinner by the pool at La POZA, and the evening is complete without ever leaving the hotel. Our honeymoon page lists the romance extras.
Where ECOTICA fits
ECOTICA Boutique Hotel & Spa is a small rainforest hotel on about 10 acres of forest, minutes from Manuel Antonio National Park, with 17 rooms: 10 suites and 7 private bungalows. It is a Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice winner. It sits close to both the beach and the park, with forest all around: howler monkeys at dawn, sloths in the trees, toucans and scarlet macaws passing over the pool. We see them most days; the rainforest keeps its own schedule, which makes every visit special.
On site there is a rainforest-view pool, breakfast included in your stay, La POZA by the pool for breakfast, lunch and dinner, YOLO Social for dinner, live music and games, and Jungle Spa. There is also a small gym with forest views and yoga on the deck.

How many nights do you need?
Three nights is a comfortable minimum. That gives you one morning in the national park, one day on the water or at the beach, and one slow day by the pool or at the spa. With five nights you can add a longer tour, such as rafting or a mangrove trip, without rushing. Our experiences page shows the tours our concierge team can help you book.
