Getting around Manuel Antonio is simpler than it looks: one main road links Quepos, the hillside, Playa Espadilla and the national park, and from ECOTICA the beach is about 3 minutes by car and the park entrance about 7. Walk down in the cool of the morning, ride back up, and let the concierge handle the longer hops. Here is how a relaxed week of moving around tends to unfold.
If you like to see the lay of the land first, keep our Manuel Antonio map open in another tab. It has the interactive map and a full table of distances; this post is the human version, the way guests actually use that road day to day.

The road that ties everything together
Almost every guest asks the same question on arrival: which way is the beach? The answer is reassuringly simple. Route 618, the Carretera Principal, starts in Quepos, climbs over the ridge where ECOTICA sits at Km 4, and rolls down to Playa Espadilla and the park entrance. Turn toward the sea for sand and monkeys, turn toward town for the market, the marina and the airstrip.
Because everything shares that one road, timing matters more than distance. In high season the stretch near the beach gets busy around midday, so the trick is to head out early and come back for a long lunch by the pool.
Beach and park mornings
The national park opens at 7 am, Wednesday to Monday, and closes on Tuesdays. Last entry is 3 pm. Mornings are cooler and the wildlife is busiest, so this is the moment to go. Book your tickets online before you leave the room (they are sold only through SINAC); our park tickets and hours guide walks you through it, and the first morning in the park post shows how that day feels.
From ECOTICA the walk to the entrance is about 41 minutes, mostly downhill, with the forest waking up around you. Prefer to save your legs for the trails? A taxi takes about 7 minutes. The park has no parking lot of its own, so a ride is usually easier than driving yourself.
For a pure beach morning, Playa Espadilla is about 23 minutes on foot or 3 minutes by car. The quieter cove of Playa Biesanz is about 4 minutes away by car, followed by a short forest path down; go early, as the cliffs shade it in the late afternoon.

Evenings out along the hill
When the light turns gold, the hill comes alive. Many of the restaurants with the best ocean and sunset views sit along the same road, only a few minutes from ECOTICA, and El Patio de Café Milagro is close enough for a short stroll. For anything further, the front desk is glad to call a taxi so nobody has to think about driving after dinner. Our Manuel Antonio restaurants guide lists the favourites, and the sunset dinners post has ideas for the golden hour.
Or simply stay in. YOLO Social has live music every night and is open until 11 pm, and it is a lovely place to end the day without going anywhere at all.
Quepos, the marina and the airstrip
Quepos centre is about 9 minutes by car and Marina Pez Vela about 11. The marina is where many catamaran, boat and sport-fishing trips begin, and most tours booked through our concierge include pickup at the hotel, which keeps the morning easy. See ocean and boat tours for what sets sail from there.
Flying in? The Quepos airstrip (XQP) is about 14 minutes away, and flights from San José take about 25 to 30 minutes. Driving from SJO takes about 3 hours along the Costanera, and our private shuttle covers that route for US$195 each way, up to 5 people. The getting to Manuel Antonio guide compares every option, including the Tracopa bus, which sells tickets in Quepos at the Mercado Municipal.

A few easy habits
- Head out early: cooler air, more wildlife and lighter traffic on the main road.
- Walk down, ride up. The hill is a gentle descent in the morning and a real climb in the afternoon heat.
- Bring water and comfortable shoes for the walk to the park or the trail to Biesanz.
- If you drive, ECOTICA’s free parking is the easy base; the park has none, and Biesanz has only roadside spaces.
- Keep the front desk’s hours in mind (6 am to 10 pm) for taxis and last-minute plans.
That is really all there is to it. Once you have walked the road once, Manuel Antonio feels like a small, friendly neighbourhood, with our boutique hotel in Manuel Antonio sitting right in the middle. For distances to every spot, open the Manuel Antonio map and distance table.
