The best first morning in Manuel Antonio National Park starts the evening before, with your tickets already booked, and ends by early afternoon with your feet in the pool. Have breakfast at La POZA from 6 am, be at the gate when it opens at 7, give the forest your quiet attention for a few hours, swim, and come home before the heat and the crowds peak.
Here is how that morning unfolds for many of our guests at ECOTICA, step by step. For the practical details (prices, hours, rules), keep our guide to Manuel Antonio National Park tickets and hours open in another tab.
The night before: tickets, a bag and an early night
Park tickets are sold online only, through SINAC’s official portal, and each one is for a set date. Book yours the evening before at the latest, and earlier in the busy months from December to April, when tickets sell out sooner. Remember that the park is closed every Tuesday, so a Tuesday is the perfect day for the spa instead.
Then pack light. The park welcomes you with a reusable water bottle, swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, repellent and good shoes, plus your passport and the reservation number. Food stays behind: it is not allowed on the trails or beaches. Lay everything out by the door, set an alarm, and fall asleep to the sound of the forest around your room.
6 am: breakfast at La POZA
Mornings at ECOTICA arrive early and softly. Howler monkeys usually announce the day before any alarm does, and by 6 am breakfast is served at La POZA, our poolside restaurant. Breakfast is included in your stay. Take a seat by the water, order something hearty, and keep an eye on the trees: toucans and scarlet macaws are often seen from the pool, and the capuchins are rarely far away.
Fill your water bottle before you leave. The front desk opens at 6 am and can call a taxi for the short ride down the hill.
6:45 am: down the road to the gate
The park entrance is about 2.8 km from ECOTICA, around 7 minutes by car along the main road. There is no parking lot at the park itself, so a taxi is the easy choice, and your own car can rest in our free parking. Arriving before 7 means you walk in with the first visitors of the day, while the air is still cool. Our Manuel Antonio map shows how close everything sits.

7 am: the first hour on the trail
This is the hour to go slowly. The animals are most active now, and the busiest stretch of the day comes later, roughly from 9 am to noon. Walk a few steps, stop, listen. Movement in the canopy is often the first clue: a branch that dips when there is no wind, a rustle that keeps pace with you.
What you may see on a first morning:
- Squirrel monkeys, the tiny mono tití that is the emblem of the park
- White-faced capuchins, bold and curious, and howler monkeys resting high up
- Two- and three-toed sloths, usually a still, rounded shape in the fork of a tree
- Raccoons and coatis near the paths, and some of the park’s roughly 352 bird species
A naturalist guide is optional, and on a first visit it is a lovely gift to yourself. Guides know where to look and often carry a scope that brings a resting sloth wonderfully close. Our concierge books naturalist-guided park tours timed for these early hours. Whichever way you go, give the animals room: no feeding, no touching, no flash and no selfies with wildlife. Our guide to responsible wildlife watching explains why it matters.
Mid-morning: beach time
The trails lead you down to the park’s beaches, where the rainforest meets the sand. Playa Manuel Antonio is the famous sheltered cove, good for swimming, with snorkeling along the sides. Playa Espadilla Sur is longer and wide at low tide, and usually quieter. Find some shade, but never under the manzanillo tree: its sap and fruit are toxic, and it is easy to recognise once someone points it out.
Swim, dry off, watch the capuchins inspect the beach bags. Lockers, restrooms and showers are inside the park if you want to rinse off before the walk back (no soap or shampoo in the park showers). The park beaches start to clear from around 3 pm, but by late morning most of our guests are happily heading home.

Afternoon: the pool, the Jungle Spa and a slower pace
Back at ECOTICA, the afternoon belongs to you. Cool off in the pool, where the wildlife often keeps you company, or book a treatment at the Jungle Spa, open daily from 7 am to 7 pm. After a morning on the trails, a massage surrounded by forest feels exactly right.
If you still want sand between your toes, the free beaches outside the park are close by. Playa Biesanz is a small sheltered cove about 1.6 km from the hotel, perfect for a calm afternoon swim. In the evening, YOLO Social has dinner and live music every night.
Staying with us at our boutique hotel in Manuel Antonio means the park is around the corner, and the rainforest continues right outside your room on our 10-acre private reserve.
