The finest sunset dinner in Manuel Antonio unfolds in three acts: a cocktail by the pool while the rainforest turns gold, the sun sinking into the Pacific from a terrace on the ridge, then a long, unhurried dinner. Close the night with live music and you have the evening our guests talk about long after they fly home. For the full list of places to eat, see our guide to the best restaurants in Manuel Antonio.
Manuel Antonio faces west over the Pacific, and the road that climbs from Quepos to the beaches runs along a green ridge. That geography is a gift at the end of the day. Here is how we like to spend one.
Act one: golden hour by the pool
Every good evening here starts slowly. At ECOTICA, that means a drink at La POZA, our poolside restaurant, in the late afternoon. The light softens through the trees of our 10-acre private reserve, and this is often when the forest wakes up again after the heat of the day. Howler monkeys call from the canopy, white-faced capuchins pass along the branches, and if you are lucky, a pair of scarlet macaws flies over in a flash of red.

La POZA is open to everyone from 6 am to 9 pm, so you don’t need to be staying with us to start your evening here. Order something cold, settle into a daybed, and give yourself half an hour of doing nothing at all. It is the best way to arrive at a sunset.
Act two: where to watch the sun go down
When the light starts to change, it’s time to move to the ridge. A handful of Manuel Antonio restaurants are known for their sunset views, and each has its own mood.
- El Avión is the one everyone remembers: a bar and restaurant built around a Fairchild C-123 cargo plane, on the main road about 2 km before the national park. Seafood, international plates and a wide ocean view.
- Le Papillon, at La Mariposa Hotel, is the polished choice: fine dining, surf and turf, and a sweeping sunset view. Book it for a celebration.
- La Terraza Café Bar Restaurante, next to Hotel La Arboleda, pairs seafood and sushi with the evening sky.
- Ronny’s Place sits on a ridge down a side road off the main road, with ocean and sunset views and Costa Rican seafood. It takes a seasonal break in the quiet months, so check its hours before you go.

Our one piece of advice: be early. Check the sunset time for your dates and arrive 30 to 45 minutes ahead, so you are settled with a drink when the sky begins to glow. The minutes just after the sun disappears are often the most colorful, so stay put a little longer than you think.
Act three: dinner
Some evenings, the sunset terrace is also the dinner table, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Other nights, it’s worth moving on. A few favorites for the main course:
- Victoria’s Gourmet Italian, next to Tulemar on the main road, for an Italian dinner for two. It takes bookings through OpenTable.
- Mangata, on Route 235 toward Quepos, for Peruvian fusion. It’s one of the highest-rated restaurants in the area on Google.
- Restaurante La Cantina, for BBQ, grill and whole fish when you’re properly hungry.
- Gabriella’s at Marina Pez Vela in Quepos, for steak and seafood with a view over the marina.
- Restaurante Marlin, facing Playa Espadilla, for seafood within earshot of the waves.
Most of these sit on or just off the main road, a few minutes’ drive from one another. Our guide to getting around Manuel Antonio has tips for moving between them in the evening.
The finale: live music at YOLO Social
No evening in Manuel Antonio should end too early. Back at ECOTICA, YOLO Social has live music every night and stays open until 11 pm, with food served until close. If you skipped dessert or never quite got to dinner, this is your second chance. It is open to everyone, and the bar has a warm, easy feel once the band starts.

A few notes for planning your sunset evening
- Reserve in high season. From December to April, sunset tables fill up. Book a day or two ahead.
- Plan around the seasons. The dry months bring the most reliably clear skies; in the green season, an umbrella in the car keeps the evening on track. Our Manuel Antonio weather guide has month-by-month detail.
- Dietary needs. La POZA and YOLO Social both have vegetarian and vegan options, and YOLO has a kids’ menu.
